I like how the tones are matched in the stairwell and the setting (or rising) sun. I also like how those tones make an L shape in the frame, how the railing lines up with the door-lever on the door, how the angles of the ladder are opposite the angles of the stair railing, and how the water looks so real and maybe a little treacherous.

These waters are treacherous. The ferry was crossing “the race,” a four mile channel with notoriously potent tides situated between Plum Island and Fisher’s Island off eastern Long Island.
